Hi! I’m Kathryn Learie—a professional animal photographer who specializes in fine art portraits, pet branding photos, and commercial animal photography—lover of all animals, especially dogs. Since I began photographing professionally 20+ years ago, I’ve had an unwavering love affair with light and an insatiable curiosity and draw for capturing the connection between people and animals.  Whenever I pick up my camera—whether it’s to photograph fine art pet portraits or commercial pet brands and businesses—my intention is always to first follow the light and then find that connection. 

There is something inexplicably heartwarming and captivating about the energy of animals and the way they interact with each other and the world around them. If I can capture that energetic essence and mysterious and soulful connection of the animals and people I work with—whether in my fine art pet portraiture or my commercial animal photography work—it lights me up and constantly renews my inspiration to keep capturing those connections and serving my clients.

Fine art dog portraits are so fulfilling.

It doesn’t matter if I’m photographing in-studio pet portraits or following pups around, camera in hand, while they run wild through the forests and grasslands of Kamloops, BC during outdoor dog portrait sessions—I am always happiest capturing dogs just doing what they do.

I truly LOVE the idea of mastering the essence of dogs and light and—even though the name Kathryn Learie often makes people in Kamloops think of the professional wedding photographer in me — it was my foray into photographing dogs years ago that really helped me discover the heart of my inspiration. Dog love—I’m sure you would agree—is quite simply one of the most beautiful things in this world. My work with dogs is a celebration of all that love, joy and companionship they bring to our lives.

And, just to be clear, I also photograph other animals and really enjoy that, too, but dogs have a special place in my heart.

Commercial pet photography is something else that has been intriguing and challenging for me in the past few years—in the best way possible. I am definitely NOT a conventional animal photographer and you’ll probably notice right away that my images never resemble the in-studio, commercial pet photography branding work we often see on pet food bags and ads floating around the web. I approach commercial animal photography and pet branding photography the same way I approach dog portraits—I chase those moments when energy and light merge to produce captivating and emotion-provoking animal images that not only make people feel something but also persuade them to purchase that feeling for themselves or their pets.
